I don’t live in East Bay, but I was here a lot in the1980s for work and family. I enjoyed your column (Fools Rush In?) when I was here. The one I recall is your hangman game w/Westerberg. Hard to understand why folks “hated” you. Were you appropriately critical of local bands?
It blows my mind that Tim and Candy Apple Grey are 40 years old! It’s weird when the youth culture ages.
IDK. There aren't too many punk rock jocks! It was probably envy at your punk rock cred + athleticism Envy. It sounds like Gilman was a boys scene, except for Tim Armstrong of Rancid.. Of course, where was Kathleen Hanna when you needed her?
Like you, I was a huge REM fan. I saw them warm up for Gang of 4 in a small WDC club. saw them 3-4 times in the tiny 930 club. After I read your column about seeing the REM tribute band, I pulled out IRS REM. (Not Fables-never liked it). The songs sounded brittle to me, not very soulful. The Mats and Huskers sound much thicker, emotional, powerful.
One more thing, then I'll leave you alone. I presume you've listened to Mat's For Sale live from Maxwell's in 1986 (40 years!)I saw them play the very next night in WDC, and the show was as powerful as the live release. No one seemed really drunk, bob's guitar was incendiary, and they didn't play half parts of a lot of covers. (I saw show like that in DC the year before). Anyway. it confirmed my view that they could be great when they wanted to be. They were also assholes when they wanted to be..
Thank you for reading my ramblings. dan weiss
Fun Fact: Brendan Canty's oldest son was a HS classmate of my son and daughter. In fact, he crashed their b'nai mitzvot. Please don't tell anyone.
I had no idea what this movie was about. Now, I'll definitely check it out. I love a trip in the way back machine, especially if it's Bay Area bound. 😄

I never really figured out why they hated me, to be honest. Because I’m a girl?
I'm pretty sure that 40 years before 1987 was 1947. (As a friend likes to say, "I was told there would be no math.")
Haha so true bestie!!
