I didnt! Your book and this one are similar in that they both have a plot (murder mystery) and deeper theme that is more important than the setting, which redeems them! But I don't think the band in your book was supposed to be bad!

(I was responding more to your general dismissal of rock-world-set novels.)

No, that's true – I think I'd like Gal's band, at least. And you know they were fun!

Yeah I am not sure it's your type of book but it is hilariously written.

This sounds fairly convincing. Not to say I’ll read it, even, but at least I would think about it

So many more people were in bad bands than good ones

I'm trying to remember a fiction rock band book I've read, and I can't. Will definitely read this one. Thanks Gina!

Looking forward to this. You're absolutely right: I can't think of a single good fiction book about being in a rock band. A well-intentioned relative gave me that Daisy Jones book and... woof. I didn't make it past 10 pages. Flipping through the rest confirmed my suspicion. I seem to recall Jonathan Lethem's You Don't Love Me Yet (2007) as being surprisingly good on some fronts and disappointing on most others. For non-rock books, though, I really enjoyed The Mambo Kings.

Oh right! Hijuelos - that's a good one! Someone on FB mentioned Pinball by Jerzy Kosinksi - totally horrid. I guess it's like my old editor once said, "Gina: people like listening to music, not reading about listening to music..."

I'll check it out, thanks for the alert. I'm hoping you didn't find my "Hold Me Down" to be singing through my elbow (as I recall, you said you really enjoyed it – despite its melancholy!)
